Desalination plant technical visit

On February 22, 2022, we had a visit from the Tecnoaguas de Santa Marta company. The visit had been requested for a technical review of the desalination plant located in the community of Loma Fresca. The visit was attended by an Engineer and a Technician from the Tecnoaguas company. Bernhard Münchmeyer was present on behalf of Terramada. Luz Estela Herrera and an official from Ilder Gomez Parks also attended.

The plant was reviewed. The desalination system was working, but due to past adjustments it no longer has the initial capacity. At the end of the visit, a report on the status of the plant was finalized to make an analysis of costs to repair the plant and for the future, make a maintenance contract.

Terramada is interested in sponsoring this plant and assuming the repair costs and maintenance contracts in exchange for the distribution of the potable water produced by the plant.

  1. I’m a retired maintenance/project engineer in the mining industry, mainly working in southern Africa and Canada. I don’t really know if I could help much – if at all, but out of interest, I have a few questions!
Is the desalination plant the only source of water for the area? What is the design delivery? How many people does it serve and over what distance?
Is the supply from the storage tanks by gravity feed, or is it pumped?
What is the depth of the water table and if there are boreholes what is the quality of the water?
Maybe too many questions at this stage, but if you think I might be of assistance, we could talk by phone.
I am loosely acquainted with Ernesto Leupin and if he is available perhaps we could arrange a phone discussion.
