What we need now!

Our project has been very successful; however, much more needs to be done.

WATER SUPPLY

Water is a limiting factor in any desert setting and is a crucial resource that will allow us to meet our environmental and social objectives.

We have secured a reliable source of native trees to be planted throughout the area; however, without water, and community commitment to water the trees and protect them from grazing livestock in their initial years, survival of the trees, shrubs, and cacti will likely be low.

Similarly, the Wayuu settlements do not have dependable access to water.  Water trucks can visit some settlements to fill tanks, but the water is quickly exhausted because access is unregulated.  Some settlements are so isolated that access to them is impossible and families must travel long distances by foot to collect water.

We are actively working with the Colombian Parks Department to re-activate a well and desalination system that will provide much needed water to members of the settlements and our reforestation efforts.  Our efforts will be geared towards obtaining maintenance rights of the well for a 5-year term, with options to renew at the completion of the initial 5 year term.

PLASTIC REDUCTION PROGRAM

Plastic changed the world in unimaginable ways.  While it made life easier, it also brought many environmental concerns that became very evident in recent years.   This is particularly true for single use plastics such as bottles, bags, and straws. Improper disposal or recycling of these products can have devastating long-term effects on the environment and is still not yet fully understood. Our goal is not to resolve the global issue, but to participate locally in the initiative to reduce single use plastics.  We aim to distribute Not an easy undertaking, but certainly one that will have a positive cumulative effect to address this issue.

REFORESTATION

The tropical dry forest has disappeared at an alarming rate.  This trend can also be seen near Wayuu settlements.  Wood is harvested for cooking and to use as building materials. in addition, goats browse on the young shoots of trees and any saplings, so recruitment is low.  We have secured a source of native trees. We are proposing to establish planting areas with exclusion fencing so the plantings have a chance.  Of course, the success of this component is highly dependent on water availability, which we are trying to secure.

I Love My Guajira!

Despite its relatively small size, Colombia is the second most biologically diverse country on Earth, home to about 10 percent of the world’s species. This incredible biodiversity results from Colombia’s varied ecosystems.
