COLOMBIA
A MEGADIVERSE COUNTRY!
Colombia is the second most biologically diverse country on Earth
Despite its relatively small size, Colombia is the second most biologically diverse country on Earth, home to about 10 percent of the world’s species.
This incredible biodiversity results from Colombia’s varied ecosystems. From the rich tropical rainforest of the Amazon and the Pacific coast to cloud forests and Paramos of the Andean cordilleras to the open savannas in the plains regions and harsh deserts in the Guajira Region. With some many ecosystems, it is not surprising that this diversity occurs.
However, these are ecosystems that evolved over time and developed a balance that works for the flora and fauna species. When we introduce outside pressures, that balance is lost and with it, species that cannot adapt to new conditions and pressures.
"A COUNTRY WITH ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL, AND POLITICAL UNREST"
WHAT ARE THE ISSUES IN COLOMBIA?
Colombia gained a negative reputation due to the violence and the drug trade that was prevalent in during the 80’s and 90’s. Since, great strides have been made towards security and Colombia is now a favored tourist destination. This is not surprising given the diversity of cultures, and landscapes that the country offers and the warm and welcoming disposition of the people.
Despite positive reviews of the country as a destination, Colombia, like many third-world countries, still has significant problems that are not addressed at any level of government. Those that figure prominently are environmental and social issues that have a profound effect on both indigenous and marginalized communities and ecosystems in Colombia. Add to this the effects of global warming, and the issues seem unsurmountable.
Many organizations and government programs do approach these communities, however, their activities are of short duration which does little more than provide temporary relief. The key to success in improving communities and the environment lies in long-term commitment between all parties, resulting in a trusting relationship between the communities, their leaders, and the organizations providing help.

TerrAmada focuses its efforts to protect the very resources that make Colombia’s remote places such a unique place.
We work with local communities to improve their lives through education, healthy meals, and the provision of clean water. We also strive to restore the dry forest ecosystems they depend on, a critical component of dry desert ecosystems. Join us in making this important undertaking a reality for years to come.
